Bland diet that helped UCer ease their symptoms

Thanks to Hania O

I saw this post during the week - thanks to Hania for letting me add it to the website. I thought this diet regime would be useful for Ulcerative Colitis sufferers out there because it's a great example of a bland diet and how they can give the digestive system, especially the colon, a rest. Hania's symptoms eased as she continued with this diet, which is great news.

I've seen rice and chicken mentioned many times in relation to bland diets - they're both foods that I eat to help me get out of a flare-up. However, although I've heard about the benefits of sauerkraut and fermented milk, I'd not thought of it as something to eat for a bland diet. It's interesting to hear that it's helping a fellow UCer!

As ever, we have to remember that UCers are all different, so it's worth mentioning that sauerkraut and fermented milk are both foods that could cause UCers symptoms - always use trial and error when finding a diet that works for you.

Here's the summary:

Foods Eaten Foods Avoided Supplements
  • Boiled chicken
  • Chicken broth
  • Jasmine rice
  • Eggs
  • Fermented milk
  • Steamed salmon
  • Sauerkraut
  • A tiny amount
  • Processed food
  • Sugars
  • Gluten
  • Limited dairy
  • Slippry Elm once a day before dinner
Notes

Fermented milk was used because probiotics supplements had given the UCer some symptoms of pain.

Both sauerkraut and fermented milk (natural yoghurt is another example of a fermented dairy product) are a great source of good bacteria. They are eaten by many people across the world and quite a few experts state they're good for keeping the digestive system strong. More info on fermented foods and colitis
